We’re all fed up

Over the weekend thousands of people converged on Parliament Hill in Canada’s capital city Ottawa. The so-called Freedom Convoy of truckers from across the country, and many hangers-on are protesting the government’s stance on COVID-19 vaccinations and mask-wearing. Indeed, as this convoy grew over a week or so to denounce vaccine requirements for cross-border trucking, it attracted many non-truckers and people with all kinds of axes to grind with the current government. I hope they found it cathartic.

While I support the truckers’ right to peaceful protest, I cannot support what they are seeking – the total removal of the pandemic mandates

I will give the truckers the benefit of the doubt and assume it was none of their number who displayed U.S. Confederate flags and called for the overthrow of the democratically elected government. Having witnessed the calamity of January 6, 2021, in Washington D.C., the Prime Minister, who is self-quarantining after having been in contact with a person who tested positive for COVID-19, and his family were moved to an unknown location, Just in case.

The Canadian Truckers Association has distanced itself from this group and has issued a statement supporting the mandates that are in place for health reasons. In addition, they are clear on the concept of cross-border vaccination requirements: “The Government of Canada and the United States have now made being vaccinated a requirement to cross the border. This regulation is not changing so, as an industry, we must adapt and comply with this mandate,” said CTA president Stephen Laskowski. “The only way to cross the border, in a commercial truck or any other vehicle, is to get vaccinated.”

While I support the truckers’ right to peaceful protest, I cannot support what they are seeking – the total removal of the pandemic mandates.

… many supporters and protesters, when interviewed and asked why they are against masks and vaccinations, stated that they are ‘fed-up’ with the mandates … No scientific background, no concern for others, just being fed up

What I find most interesting is that many supporters and protesters, when interviewed and asked why they are against masks and vaccinations, stated that they are ‘fed-up’ with the mandates, as well as all other COVID-19-related measures. They want to get back to ‘normal’. No scientific background, no concern for others, just being fed up.

Have we come to the point where being fed up is a justifiable reason for going against measures that are in place to slow the spread of COVID-19? If mass numbers of vaccinated people were displaying serious side-effects I could understand. But that is far from reality.

I am sure everyone gets fed up at some time or other. I imagine many diabetics get fed up with daily injections of insulin, but they don’t dare stop. I am sure there have been many parents who on occasion were fed up with a wailing, teething baby, yet they didn’t just walk away. And what about those Londoners during The Blitz? I have to believe many of them grew to be fed up with nighttime blackouts that served as protection of the neighbourhood from Nazi bombers. But did they go rogue and ignore the edict? Not without suffering the wrath of neighbours and Air Raid Wardens alike.

Of course, those who have served Canada in various armed conflicts, in harm’s way as the term goes, must have on occasion been fed up. Fed up with risking their lives, fed up with being away from loved ones. Thankfully these women and men didn’t merely walk away from the task at hand.

I’m fed up with stop signs and red traffic lights … From this point henceforth I am going to zip right through stop signs and red lights. That’ll show them!

So I asked myself, ‘Self,’ I said, ‘With what are you fed-up?’ And the answer was simple; I’m fed up with stop signs and red traffic lights. Yep, nothing peeves me more than having to come to a full and complete stop (this is Canada after all, no rolling stops here) countless times a day. They are bad for the environment as they cause vehicles to idle, and are annoying.

In fact, it has been building up inside of me to near the bursting point. So, like my fellow anti-masker and anti-vaxxer fed ups, I’m going to take action, I’m going to stop stopping. From this point henceforth I am going to zip right through stop signs and red lights. That’ll show them who’s boss!

I don’t care if this will have any ramifications on other members of society, but so what if it does, I’m fed up.

  1. At the same time of this articles clearly biased standpoint. I don’t see either side showing any credible science to back them up. Mainly because the numbers have been significantly either exaggerated or omitted to the point that there’s no credibility to the “science’. This protest was about your freedom of choice to whether or not to get a vaccine . Not quite sure how you journalists missed the point of this so badly. Probably because you only watch the news and didn’t actually go down there to see what the people are actually saying

    1. Shane, thanks for dropping in and commenting. The only thing I want to point out is that I am not a journalist, just a guy with a blog.
