Smith vs Rock was no Mailer vs Vidal

During the 1960s and 70s, authors Gore Vidal and Norman Mailer were fierce rivals and often combatants. They just didn’t like each other. In one famous incident during a crowded party, Vidal was talking with a group of people and was accosted by Mailer who threw his drink in Vidal’s face, punched him, then head-butted him to the floor. Vidal’s brilliant reaction, given their profession, was “Norman, once again words have failed you’.

Call me a skeptic if you will, but there is still something odd about the Academy Awards now-infamous Will Smith slap directed at Chris Rock

Recently we saw another display of physical abuse between two entertainers. Call me a skeptic if you will, but there is still something odd about the Academy Awards now-infamous Will Smith slap directed at Chris Rock. The issue has been analyzed, debated, discussed, bandied about, and dissected. Yet one option, although discussed, remains unanswered. Was the whole thing a stunt?

Given the venue, there is no shortage of photos available for study. In the one above, from the LA Times, It looks to me as though Smith is grinning after having slapped Rock. For that matter, Rock doesn’t look all that upset either. I have to believe that if Smith was really as angry as he claims to have been, he would have used a closed fist instead of an open hand slap.

Am I suggesting the two pre-arranged the whole thing? Not at all. But both men are sharp-witted performers who, I believe, could easily have ad-libbed this entire fracas.

In fact, one could make the argument that Smith was concerned the incident may have been taken as a joke and this led to his hollering from the audience upon his return. It’s possible that Smith and Rock failed to convey the degree of seriousness intended, so Smith made it clear by shouting at Rock, thus evoking the ‘My God, he’s serious’ response from the audience.

Am I suggesting the two pre-arranged the whole thing? Not at all. But both men are sharp-witted performers who, I believe, could easily have ad-libbed this entire fracas.

Only time will tell, but I won’t be surprised if at some point in the future it is revealed that the whole thing was an attempt to liven a dull show. As well as garnering significant media exposure for the participants.
