Like Sting I Hope the Russians Love Their Children Too

It’s been a scary time. Over the last few years, we have managed to deal with a deadly pandemic, only to find ourselves on the brink of a disaster in Ukraine, one that has already created a humanitarian crisis as innocent Ukrainian citizens either flee for their lives or stay and fight a much bigger and stronger enemy.

While COVID19 cannot be left unchecked, with science, in the form of vaccinations, it appears to be on its last legs. There is much debate about what caused the pandemic; often these are fueled by bigotry and xenophobia. What is important is that it – COVID19 – does exist and must be dealt with. Once we get the all-clear then we can attempt to determine the origin.

However, unlike COVID19, with the situation in Ukraine, no doubt at all exists regarding the origin of the horror

Watching a variety of world news outlets, reading media from east and west, the potential for worldwide disaster is made clear. The simple fact that sensible people are merely asking about the possibility of a Third World War, only positing it as a potentiality, is enough to jangle the nerves of people far and wide.

However, unlike COVID19, with the situation in Ukraine, no doubt at all exists regarding the origin of the horror. Russian President Vladimir Putin is, in the eyes of the world, the person responsible for the invasion of Ukraine. Clearly, no amount of world hand-slapping is going to have any effect on him. His reputation as a team player is non-existent. He won’t be shamed into realizing the errors of his ways. He has made a living being the skunk at the tea party, so much so he is no longer invited to the party.

(Putin) has made a living being the skunk at the tea party, so much so he is no longer invited to the party.

Therefore, it appears that those of us who would like to see a peaceful solution (I do understand that that ship may have already sailed) to the Russian invasion of Ukraine are left with the hope that Russian men and women will act in defense of their loved ones.

I have had an earworm for the last few weeks. It’s the Sting song The Russians which includes the lyric

We share the same biology, regardless of ideology
But what might save us, me and you
Is if the Russians love their children too
