AWOL Mincemeat

Like my mother, and grandmother before, I have taken on the festive ‘chore’ of baking dozens of tarts and several Tourtière. Over the course of the last couple of weeks of November and first half of December I pick up a few ingredients each week when we do our grocery shopping.

Powdered almonds and seedless (oh, it must be seedless) raspberry jam for almond tarts, the meats (beef, pork, and veal) that make up the concoction that goes into a Tourtière all start to appear in our kitchen. I used to make my own pastry, but have found a ready-made frozen product that is just as good and easier to work with (sorry Nana!).

Both my mother and grandmother made tarts in muffin tins, using pastry made from scratch, although in her later years my mother had no qualms about switching to the pre-fab individual tart shells which I still use (sorry again Nana!).

Aside from Tourtière and almond tarts, mincemeat tarts are a staple of Christmas in our family. If you are not familiar with the concept, while at one time the filling did contain meat, that was long ago and far away. Mincemeat is a combination of dried fruits, brandy (if you want) and several spices. I don’t know anyone who makes their own, as it is a complex undertaking.

If you have any suggestions as to where I may perhaps find mincemeat in the Montreal area, please let me know. My grandmother thanks you!

There are several mincemeat products that are just fine, from the reasonably priced President’s Choice and E.D. Smith to the much pricier Crosse and Blackwell version. But that’s during a normal years, a non-pandemic year. I know it’s early days yet, but I have not been able to find any mincemeat product in any of the usual places (i.e. my local supermarket).

A late breaking development – E.D. Smith responded to my email informing me that their Mincemeat product has been discontinued.

Dear Deegan, If you check out Amazon.ca they have several kinds and it’s usually less than a week shipping, tho’ you never know. We have a Prime account so shipping is free. If you are really desperate, we could order some for you. Let me know. I remember your mum’s very well. Chris could usually manage three in a visit! Lin
