The inaugural occurrence having been in 1970, it’s the 50th Earth Day today. So let’s all sing together, you know the tune:

ED

It’s also a new moon tonight. Perhaps Mother Nature will see fit to celebrate these two events by eradicating the novel coronavirus 2019 with one regal wave of her hand. Then again we’ve been doing so much damage to her domain that she may just let us pay the price.

The bible is full of forty-day references including: in the Old Testament when God destroyed the earth with water, He caused it to rain 40 days and 40 nights.

As if Earth Day and a new moon were not enough to get excited about, today also marks the fortieth day of self-isolation for my wife and me. That’s a significant number; the word quarantine was derived from the Italian quaranta giorni which means 40 days.

So it seems to me that we have fulfilled the quarantine requirements as outlined in the 14th century. Ships of the day were, upon arriving in Venice from potentially plague-infected points of origin were made to sit at anchor for 40 days before being allowed to land.

I’m sure hoping this does not turn into a session of Centotine!

The bible is full of forty-day references including: in the Old Testament when God destroyed the earth with water, He caused it to rain 40 days and 40 nights (Genesis 7:12); after Moses killed the Egyptian, he fled to Midian, where he spent 40 years in the desert (Acts 7:30); the Israelites wandered for 40 years (Deuteronomy 8:2-5). Lent is also forty days, but if you count them on a calendar remember not to include Sundays.

But no; we are still in a self-isolation situation. The Italian word for 100 is cento. I’m sure hoping this does not turn into a session of Centotine!
