Let’s Not Short Change Ourselves On Summer


It may well be August 31st but the cicadas evidently didn’t get the memo that this signals the end of summer. They are singing their little hearts out with the temperature still up in the eighties and the level of humidity enough to require many brows to be mopped.

We spend too many months paying the price for summer (i.e. enduring winter’s wrath) to short-change ourselves.

Yet something is different; there’s something in the air, and it isn’t just pollen. Even if the calendar gives us almost a full week of September before Labor Day, you can sense a return to the workaday routines. People are back in the city from summer cottages. Kids are back from camps, and day camps are done with for another year. Schools are in gear and ready to train minds, young and otherwise.

What’s the rush?

According to a recent article on Fortune.Com, “U.S. employees typically leave about 429 million paid vacation days on the table every year”. That’s a significant amount of battery-recharging that isn’t taking place. The same article illustrates that 40% of managers believe that rested employees are more productive. Seems like a win-win situation and yet we don’t take full advantage.

So why the dash to get restarted come the end of August? There’s still a week of summer left by my calculation. With our long winters in Montreal we cherish summer, so what gives? Would you skip the last chapter of a great book to start the next? Play only 17 holes of a pleasant round of golf? Of course not. So let’s not pay the bill and dash out before dessert.
