At last everyone’s favourite side-hugging, pickle-eating frumpy-dressing family the Duggars are going to break their silence and will address the molestation issue that has put them in a different light. In fact they have already issued statements about eldest child Josh’s actions as a young teenager when he enjoyed playing a bit of slap and tickle with several underage girls, including his sisters. The family assures the viewing public that appropriate actions were taken at the time and that all is done and dusted in Duggarland. So what more can we expect from Wednesday’s interview with FOX News?
I guess it comes as no surprise that the Duggars chose FOX as their vehicle to go public. Given that network’s conservative, right-leaning angle on most things, they will be on friendly turf when interviewed by Megyn Kelly. Will she lob soft questions at the family that they can knock out of the park? What puts Kelly in a bit of a bind is that this is not a case of the family coming on TV and denying allegations; all has been admitted. No amount of lipstick on this pig will make it look any less porcine.
What can the Duggars hope to gain by this? I suspect they will lead things in the direction of the post-molesting counseling Josh received from another Advanced Training Institute (ATI) following family. They can’t expunge the acts, but they can go to town with the ‘cure’. Imagine if you will, an ultra-conservative family being interviewed by a conservative network about how to deal with a child molester. Under other circumstances there would be calls for drawing, quartering and being strung up by testicles – not necessarily in that order. But when the culprit is one of their own, a bit of counseling seems to have done the trick.
Will the folks at TLC spend time coaching the Duggars on what to say and what not to say? They have a big dog in this fight, the 19 Kids and Counting show is a fixture in millions of homes, if not as something viewers can relate to (these are not The Brady Bunch), then as a bit of a sociological study. Big money is at stake here.
