It feels like it’s been here for 17 months, but it probably has only been four or five. Of course I’m referring to winter. Yes, I’m Canadian, but even we have a breaking point. I don’t want to get rid of winter permanently as I believe you can only really appreciate summer when you juxtapose it with winter – and to be honest the first bit of winter, let’s say up to the end of December, can be quiet pleasant. Holiday festivities and a reacquainting with Jack Frost and his nipping, hot chocolate and rum toddies.
But this winter has had us in its tightening grip for far too long, poking at us with frigid temperatures and this week a real mood sinker, a late season snowstorm. It’s enough. As we used to say, or those who used to be bullies used to make us say: Uncle! According Wikipedia, “the exclamation “Uncle!” is an indication of submission – analogous to “I give up” – or it may be a cry for mercy, in such a game or match”. Bingo! That just about sums it up, a cry for mercy from the bully that is winter. I give up, bring on spring. C’mon, it’s almost St Patrick’s day.
