Mardi Gras: Beads, Flashers, Families and Pancakes

So maybe women with voluptuous breasts flash  them for plastic beads in New Orleans, but in my house Fat Tuesday will involve something much more flat – pancakes!

Happy Mardi Gras! Fat Tuesday when folks have one last blow-out of debauchery prior to the forty days of abstinence during Lent. In Rio the Samba Schools will compete in the grand finale of the carnival season. The streets of New Orleans will be filled with parades tonight featuring colorful costumes and great bands. But for many the real event is what happens after the parades. Think of it as Spring Break meets Rio Carnivals and you have an idea.

But for the fourth year in a row another Mardi Gras will also take place. This one a few miles from Bourbon Street is very family friendly. No flashing of breasts for beads, no alcohol, no voodoo, just good old family fun. Wisely the city of New Orleans is trying to attract more than just the exotic tourist dollar.

But for me Mardi Gras isn’t about parades, beads, samba or costumes – it’s all about pancakes! The traditional consumption of pancakes to use up the fat that would be avoided during Lent. So maybe women with voluptuous breasts flash  them for plastic beads in New Orleans, but in my house Fat Tuesday will involve something much more flat – pancakes!

  1. When I was younger…much younger, thank you…I would mispronounce “voluptuous” as “voLUMPtuous”. Plus apropos, n’est ce-pas?
