I’m so vain, I think that song’s about me

Carly Simon’s classic You’re so Vain is an iconic seventies mega-hit steeped in mystery. The song hit #1 in 1973 and has had people guessing ever since. Is it about Mick, Warren, Kris, Cat or some other socialite? A big-shot from NBC paid $50,000 in a charity auction to be told the secret but only after signing a raft of Non-Disclosure and Confidentiality agreements. It seems Taylor Swift is also in on the secret.

But while all attention has been focused on who the song is about, another mystery brews: what the hell is gavotte. Being curious I checked out this lyric “You had one eye in the mirror as you watched yourself gavotte”. Wikipedia defines it as a French folk dance and states that in this context it can be taken to mean a pretentious or egotistical style of dancing. So that pretty much ruled out me as the subject of the song. I can do the Twist or the Watusi and, given enough beer I can Dougie, but gavotte just isn’t me.

Another teenage hope down the drain.
