Facebook and Cheap Trick: I’d like you to like me

A few days ago I started a Facebook fan page for my blog. I had been posting my blog to my profile page but was made to understand this is a Facebook no-no, one that can result in the profile page being unceremoniously yanked. Not wanted to roil the waters I linked a spanking new “Fan Page” to my blog. I wish they didn’t call it that as I really don’t think I have fans, if I’m lucky I have readers, but I’ll leave the fan concept for the Justin Biebers of the world. (I also shook up things here with a theme change to reflect my Identity.)

So allow me to paraphrase Cheap Trick and say I’d like you to like me. Please ….

One of the differences between a Facebook page and profile is that what drives the page are “Likes” not contacts. Once you achieve 30 “Likes” you get access to all kinds of cool statistics. I hope they can tell me who isn’t reading my blog so I can work on them, but I have a hunch they’ve not perfected that metric just yet. So I now find myself feeling a bit like a five-year old asking expletive to  “Like” me. It’s kind of a shallow liking because it doesn’t require anything but a click on the “Like” button. No sense of friendship, no reciprocity expected, just a simple “Like”.

When I see some of the other fan pages out there with astronomical numbers of “Likes” I get a sense of how Tommy Smothers felt when he would remind his brother Dick that “Mom always liked you best”.

Glam Rockers Cheap Trick were known to say

I want you to want me.

I need you to need me.

I’d love you to love me.

I’m beggin’ you to beg me.

So allow me to paraphrase them and say I’d like you to like me. Please ….
