Facebook and Cheap Trick: I’d like you to like me

A few days ago I started a Facebook fan page for my blog. I had been posting my blog to my profile page but was made to understand this is a Facebook no-no, one that can result in the profile page being unceremoniously yanked. Not wanted to roil the waters I linked a spanking new “Fan Page” to my blog. I wish they didn’t call it that as I really don’t think I have fans, if I’m lucky I have readers, but I’ll leave the fan concept for the Justin Biebers of the world. (I also shook up things here with a theme change to reflect my Identity.)

So allow me to paraphrase Cheap Trick and say I’d like you to like me. Please ….

One of the differences between a Facebook page and profile is that what drives the page are “Likes” not contacts. Once you achieve 30 “Likes” you get access to all kinds of cool statistics. I hope they can tell me who isn’t reading my blog so I can work on them, but I have a hunch they’ve not perfected that metric just yet. So I now find myself feeling a bit like a five-year old asking expletive to  “Like” me. It’s kind of a shallow liking because it doesn’t require anything but a click on the “Like” button. No sense of friendship, no reciprocity expected, just a simple “Like”.

When I see some of the other fan pages out there with astronomical numbers of “Likes” I get a sense of how Tommy Smothers felt when he would remind his brother Dick that “Mom always liked you best”.

Glam Rockers Cheap Trick were known to say

I want you to want me.

I need you to need me.

I’d love you to love me.

I’m beggin’ you to beg me.

So allow me to paraphrase them and say I’d like you to like me. Please ….

  1. Ha, I too just started a Fan page on Facebook. I wasn’t aware you couldn’t post your blog to your personal page so maybe it’s lucky I started the ‘fan page’ . I started mine to distance my blog from myself. I like compartmentalising 🙂 I too found the name a little odd and actually thought a first I was trying to set up the wrong thing. I must go visit your fanpage 🙂

    1. I’ll be pleased to drop by yours as well. Cheers.

  2. I didn’t know you couldn’t post your blog to your personal page either. Thanks for the lesson. I did start a fan page so I think I’m ok.

    1. As I understand it, and I sure could be wrong, IF they were to see that you are using a Profile as a Page, they could pull it. I’ve never heard of it being done, but when the alternative is free, what the heck. Thanks for dropping by.

  3. I also did this fan page thing – recommendation from WordPress. Have not yet got a pay check, but who knows. I think I did it because it is there, and it suits me. I had been cross posting my blogs to my “normal” page for a long while, but now they arrive on my fan page. Do I have fans? I think so.

    1. Same reason I did it. Maybe WordPress gets a kickback from Facebook!!

  4. You’ve inspired me to “like” Cheap Trick’s Facebook!

  5. I’ll like you, if you like me (I’ve only got two and yes, you feel like you’re out there, alone.

  6. I’ve got a few hundred likes to spare, just hit me back if you’re up to it.

  7. Hmmm nice ideas thanks for sharing it with us.

  8. I’m not a Facebook kind of person, but good luck to you with your contacts.
