Montreal needs a Candigato like Morris

Here in Montreal we are currently mayorless. Our last elected mayor stepped down in November amid allegations of corruption. An interim mayor was elected by the city counselors to hold down the fort until the municipal elections are held this coming November. That interim mayor was arrested yesterday and faces 14 charges including fraud and, wouldn’t you know it, corruption. There is a long history of municipal politicians running afoul of the law, usually in a profitable way – not to be confused with Toronto mayor Rob Ford’s alleged crack use – but this one may take the cake.

Another place that has had its share of corrupt politicians and municipal authorities is Mexico. Perhaps Montreal can take a lesson from Xalapa, Mexico and promote a feline candidate, El Candigato Morris by name, whose main platform plank is to rid city hall of all the rats,  including a proposed cabinet featuring Garfield, Top Cat, and Puss-in-Boots. What started out as a joke has taken off including a Facebook page with over 126,000 likes to date.

If rats in city hall are the driving force behind feline candidates our next ballot should ideally look more like a program from a TICA (The International Cat Association) event than a slate of candidates

There has been an investigation into corruption in Quebec for several months called the Charbonneau Commission from which many arrests have sprung. This group of skilled professionals has been successful in exposing much graft and corruption at various levels of government. I have no idea what the cost will be, but I can’t help but believe a few cats could have chased the rats away for significantly less.

So I wish El Candigato Morris the very best of luck in his candidacy (cat-idacy?) for office in Mexico and look forward to a similar solution here!
