Kentucky Derby; Montreal’s julep goes green

JulepToday is the 139th running of the Kentucky Derby, the first leg of the famous Triple Crown of horse racing. The event is steeped in tradition for those of the horsey set, including the wearing of elaborate and silly hats and the consumption of a concoction called Mint Julep.

The field for this year’s Derby is wide open with many potential winners. My knowledge of horse handicapping is severely limited to horse color and cool name. But I’ll go out on a limb and say the winner will be Goldencents. This horse will be jockeyed by Kevin Krigger and should they win Krigger will become the first Black jockey to win since 1902.

In honor of the Run for the Roses, Montreal’s iconic Orange Julep has, for one day only, gone mint green. (Just kidding!)

Those of you who might be familiar with Montreal’s Orange Julep will find the recipe below significantly different, not only in fruit base, but the addition of bourbon.
