Lots of diamonds in the news today. Tomorrow is the official opening of Major League Baseball’s Spring Training; a true harbinger of , well …, spring. Players have been reporting voluntarily for several days now but tomorrow they have to be on hand or else!
Once the “Boys of Summer” get back to action, albeit in the warm and sunny climes of Florida and Arizona, fine weather can’t be too far away … please!
The best thing about Spring Training is the relaxed atmosphere; players stretching and running in the outfield during games. Fans getting up close to the players at small ballparks. I think the latest trend by many teams to move some of the Grapefruit league games north to the home city of the team (Toronto does this) takes something away from the tradition of Spring Training. Of course it does afford the team an opportunity to fill a large venue with baseball starved fans and thereby generate added income. After all, sadly, it’s about the money.
In other diamond news armed men stole millions of dollars worth of diamonds from a plane at a Brussels airport.
Police on Tuesday were looking for eight men who made a hole in a security fence of Brussels’ international airport, drove onto the tarmac and robbed tens of millions of dollars worth of diamonds from the hold of a Swiss-bound plane.
Certainly baseball involves theft, but only of bases. Nobody takes the whole damn diamond, never mind thousands of them!
