A pod of Orca Killer Whales is trapped in the frozen water of Hudson bay in Québec’s north. What is needed is an icebreaker to free the whales and allow them to return to more accommodating waters. However, that is a pricey option according to Lyne Morisette a marine ecologist and researcher at the Université de Québec à Rimouski.
“It would be Utopian to assume the DFO (Department of Fisheries and Oceans Canada) is scrambling to get an icebreaking ship on site,” Morisette. “The government has cut funding to DFO just as they have with dozens of federal departments, so its tough to see them freeing up money for this. However, the fact the killer whales are an endangered species definitely helps their case.”
I’m certainly no proponent of capital punishment, but those who are would argue that a country such as Canada that no longer engages in executions has probably “saved” many killers. So, in keeping with our policy of saving killers, I feel it incumbent on the Canadian government to save these Killer Whales.
If it proves to be a costly undertaking, even considering the fact the killer whales are an endangered species, the DFO should seek sponsorship – maybe get Apple to adopt them and start a “Save the Ipod of Whales” campaign? Seems like a money-maker to me.
