Even way back when there were only six teams in the NHL, the majority of them – four – were based in the United States, yet the “N” in NHL still seemed to denote the Canadian “nation” due to a vast majority of players having been born in Canada. As the league expanded by adding teams and grew as European players started leaving to play here (many of whom couldn’t before for political reasons) and US players developed, the NHL took on a much more international look. All to the betterment of the game – except for the diving!!
Now, with only one round of playoffs done there are no Canadian teams playing. Pity. Is it time to change the name to the USHL? Or is it an indication that golf courses in Canada are ready earlier than they used to be therefore giving Canadian based teams less incentive to play through to June? If that is the case, the whole thing can be blamed on Global Warming!! That might just save a few coaching jobs!
Enjoy the NHL playoffs!!
